A wolf in the Netherlands

The wolf in the Netherlands: a hot topic

The wolf—a topic that has ignited fervent discussions among farmers and nature enthusiasts in recent years. Some argue that it should never have returned to the Netherlands, while others assert that nature's course cannot be altered, and there is ample space for this majestic creature to coexist. There's also the perspective that the wolf's return might be nature's way of rectifying the imbalance caused by an excess of prey animals. For years, the absence of larger predators in the Netherlands led to unfortunate mass killings of animals during winters. Regardless of where one stands in this debate, the wolf remains indifferent to human opinion. It has returned, seemingly for good, and its presence has left a substantial mark on the Netherlands.

To be honest, we certainly do not mind the wolf’s return. Many a time, we embarked on journeys to the Veluwe, hopeful to catch a glimpse of this elusive creature. However, our efforts were in vain. The wolf, by nature, is a wary being, keeping its distance from humans. Its intentions don't include harm towards people, unless provoked. We had no intentions of provoking a wolf, so we weren’t afraid of encountering one. However, it seemed this was not to be, that is until...

Let’s meet the wolf

One summer morning Greg set out to explore a heath area near our home before heading to work. He had ample time, thanks to the early rising sun. Regrettably, Jacobine opted to stay behind. Greg enjoyed his morning walk, already spotting several roe deer. Capturing these graceful creatures against the backdrop of the purple heather was a delightful bonus. The weather was beautiful, the surroundings quiet, and the wildlife at ease.

Suddenly, the Highland cattle started bellowing loudly. What was causing this commotion? Greg continued his walk, ventured into a small wooded area, and came to an astonished stop. Right in front of him stood a wolf! It gazed back at Greg, seemingly unfazed by his presence. Eventually, it sauntered into the heather, making its way towards the cows. Talk about an unexpected gift! A wolf, a sight Greg hadn't anticipated, and in such a breathtaking setting! The wolf remained remarkably composed, moving among the agitated cows. These animals bellowed, but their size made their chances of becoming the lone wolf’s prey rather slim.

This interaction between the cows and the wolf continued for another half hour. The cows gradually moved on, and the wolf followed suit. With adrenaline coursing through his veins, Greg used this precious time to capture as many photographs as possible. Eventually, the wolf tired of its playful game and headed towards the forest, crossing the heathland in the process. Given the limited time on his hands, Greg made the decision to return to the car. The excitement, however, remained with him—an unexpected and wondrous encounter that would be etched in his memory.
